Much of the meat stocked in Kenyan outlets is contaminated, a study carried out by UK-based agency World Animal Protection has shown.
Local newspaper DailyNation (paywall) quotes World Animal Protection as saying a big number of pork, chicken and other meat products stocked in supermarkets in Kenya had harmful bacteria and therefore were not fit for human consumption.
The organisation says suppliers of livestock products tend to use a lot of antibiotics to boost the growth of their animals and curb disease, causing a threat to humans.
Experts are also warning of complications as a result of eating contaminated food such as diarrhoea and a wide range of abdominal issues that are not easy to treat.
The study was done in six counties – Nairobi, Kisumu, Laikipia, Nakuru, Nyeri and Uasin Gishu – with 187 pork samples and 206 chicken samples collected from six supermarkets in the country.
They were from local, regional and international brands.
